When your skin starts to look different in the mirror and you look tired even after a good night's sleep, it’s time to call in some expert help. A facelift or mini facelift at New Jersey Plastic Surgery is a way to hit the reset button on the signs of aging. Our facial plastic surgery techniques fix the sagging skin and weakened muscles that cause jowls and an aging appearance around your jaw. By repositioning the underlying structures of the face, we help you achieve a more youthful appearance that looks entirely natural.
Led by board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Barry DiBernardo and Dr. Matthew Trovato, our practice serves patients from Montclair, Clifton, Newark, and Morristown. Whether you require a comprehensive full facelift or a more targeted mini facelift, our goal is a result that looks like a younger version of you.
A facelift is a surgical procedure that erases signs of aging on the lower half of your face. As the natural aging process occurs, the fat in our cheeks starts to slide down and our skin begins to lose its elasticity. During the facelift procedure, we lift the deeper facial tissues, specifically the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS), back into a natural position. This provides a longer-lasting facial rejuvenation than non-surgical treatments alone.
This procedure can erase years from your appearance, enabling you to feel better about your self-image and boosting your confidence. If you desire a more youthful, vibrant look, a facelift may be right for you. The following information, along with a consultation, can help you decide if a facelift can help you feel better about your self-image.
If you are just starting to see a little sagging or jowls around your jaw, a mini facelift might be a better fit. This version uses shorter incisions and focuses mostly on the lower part of your face. It’s a great way to get a lift without the longer recovery process of a full surgery. It works much better than fillers for fixing a loose jawline.
While a more youthful appearance is the primary goal, the clinical benefits of facial rejuvenation go much deeper than the surface. By repositioning the deeper facial tissues and the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS), we can achieve long-lasting results that a simple injectable filler or non-surgical treatment cannot replicate.
The benefits of a facelift include:
What Can a Facelift Address?
Nonsurgical facial rejuvenation solutions can temporarily improve the appearance of wrinkles and restore lost facial volume.
However, these treatments don’t address sagging tissue, which is crucial to reverse many of the signs of aging listed above. Only a facelift is able to target this sagging tissue for comprehensive rejuvenation benefits. A facelift can provide a wide range of facial rejuvenation benefits throughout the middle and lower portions of your face, as well as your neck. The procedure can address:
Most of our facelift patients are between 40 and 60 years old, but it really depends on your skin. If you are experiencing sagging skin around the lower face and jawline, a facelift can help you feel rejuvenated.
Keep in mind that the results of a facelift don’t address signs of aging around the eyes or forehead. If this is your primary area of concern, Dr. DiBernardo may recommend Eyelid surgery or Brow lift to achieve your desired outcome. If your primary goals are to eliminate jowls or banding in the neck region, Dr. DiBernardo may recommend a neck lift for enhanced results.
Ideal facelift candidates:
On the other hand, you might be an ideal candidate for a mini facelift if you are just starting to see minor sagging or jowls and still have good skin elasticity. This option is perfect for younger patients or those who want to refresh their jawline with less downtime than a full surgery.
During your initial consultation in our New Jersey office, we’ll look at your face shape and your skin to make sure surgery is the right move for you.
During a consultation with New Jersey Plastic Surgery, your surgeon will examine your face shape and bone structure, along with your skin’s health.
Your surgeon will discuss your expectations for the procedure and may contact your primary physician in order to rule out any possible complications. A medical checkup will be performed to ensure that you are in good health to undergo this procedure. If you suffer from conditions, such as blood clotting disorders, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or excessive scarring on your face and neck, it is possible you may be ineligible for a facelift procedure.
Your surgeon will provide you with specific instructions to prepare for your surgery and to help you as you recover. You may be advised to stop taking certain medications and will be instructed not to smoke.
It is important that you plan to have someone drive you home and be available to take care of you after your surgery. You should expect to follow a diet of soft foods and liquids for several days after the procedure, as you may experience limited ability to speak, eat and drink.
At our Practice in New Jersey facelifts are typically performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning you go home the same day, and may be performed in an office-based facility, surgery center, or hospital.
Most often, the procedure only takes about two hours. Your treatment plan depends on your unique facial anatomy and bone structure. We offer various facelift techniques, including the traditional facelift and the advanced deep plane facelift. A deep plane approach allows the plastic surgeon to move the deeper layers and facial muscles as one unit, which creates smoother skin and a more natural-looking youthful appearance without a "pulled" look.
The most common incision techniques are:
During this procedure, incisions will be made from your temples down around and behind the ear. If necessary, another incision may be made underneath the chin. This procedure is often called the “full facelift,” as it involves sculpting fatty tissues around the neck and jowls. A traditional facelift repositions muscle tissues and often includes re-draping of the face.
This procedure is not as extensive as the traditional facelift, as it uses short incisions from the temple down around the ear. Depending on the extent of the facelift, incisions may also be required in the lower eyelids and/or the upper lip as well. This type of procedure is typically used for limited rejuvenation around the eyes and mouth.
This procedure focuses on the neck and jowls, as well as fat deposits underneath the chin. A neck lift involves an incision around the earlobe and behind the ear to the lower scalp.

Recovery from a facelift is relatively easy and painless. Following facelift surgery, you will wear bandages to minimize swelling. While you should expect bruising and some tightness, we will provide pain medication to keep you comfortable during the recovery process. It is important to keep your head elevated and follow all sun protection guidelines to ensure proper healing. Our board certified team will monitor your medical history throughout to prevent rare complications like excess blood collection or nerve injury.
You may expect to experience fatigue for the first few days after your procedure. After three to four days, you will find yourself able to increase your level of activity, while still taking it relatively easy. Speaking, eating, and drinking may be difficult as you recover from your facelift.
Most of our New Jersey facelift patients find that they are able to return to work and normal life after 10 to 14 days. A full recovery may take several weeks to a few months though your individual healing time will be dependent on your overall health and ability to allow your face adequate time to recuperate.
You can start taking light walks right away, but you should avoid the gym or heavy lifting for a few weeks. You want to give your incision sites plenty of time to heal perfectly so the scars stay as small and hidden as possible.
You’ll see a big change as soon as the bandages come off, but your final look will show up after a few months once your face fully settles. A facelift doesn't stop you from aging, but it does turn back the clock by about 10 or 15 years. Most people don't feel like they need a touch-up for a very long time.
Every face is different, so the price depends on what you need. We'll give you a clear quote during your visit that covers everything: the surgeon, the anesthesia, and the facility. A facelift is considered to be elective, so most insurance providers won’t cover the costs. To help make facelift surgery affordable and accessible for everyone, New Jersey Plastic Surgery® offers financing options. For your convenience, we accept cash, check, Visa®, Master®Card, American Express®, and Discover®. Financing options via CareCredit® are also available.

It doesn't stop aging forever, but it usually lasts about 10 to 15 years. You will always look better than you would have if you hadn't had the surgery.
We hide the incisions in the natural folds of your ears and inside your hairline. Once they heal, they are usually very hard to find, even if you wear your hair up.
While a facelift is designed to lift loose skin and deeper tissues, it does not change the actual skin quality or skin texture. For fine lines or sun damage, we may recommend combining your surgery with laser resurfacing or injectable fillers.
A facelift fixes your cheeks and jawline. A neck lift fixes the loose bands or turkey neck under your chin. Most of the time, we do both together so your face and neck match.
A traditional facelift mainly tightens the skin and the top muscle layer. A deep plane facelift goes under the facial muscles to release and move the deeper layers of the face. This usually leads to more natural contours and a faster recovery process.
No, a facelift only works on the bottom part of your face. If you want to fix a heavy brow or forehead wrinkles, you might want to look into a brow lift.
You can usually start wearing makeup about a week after surgery, once your stitches are removed.
Yes. Many people switch to a facelift once fillers aren't enough to lift their sagging skin. The surgery works really well with the volume that fillers already provide.
