Is Sofwave FDA Approved?

Sofwave received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in September 2019 after clinical trials were performed to evaluate efficacy. The company, Expression Sofwave Medical Ltd., is an aesthetic device manufacturer.

Their Sofwave system is indicated for use as a non-invasive treatment to improve fine lines and wrinkled skin. The blinded study evaluated 59 participants. Dr. Roy Geronemus and Dr. Arielle Kauvar of New York served as investigators on the study. The Sofwave study results were remarkable. Eight-six percent of subjects showed improvement of treated wrinkles, and 78% of treated subjects were correctly identified by reviewers that compared pre- and post-treatment photographs of study participants. Even the studyā€™s lead investigators expressed surprise at the effectiveness achieved with a single treatment.

The Latest Collagen Induction Therapy Device

Sofwave is a handheld state-of-the-art device. It softens fine lines and wrinkles via ultrasound energy.

The name for the healing response prompted by Sofwave is neo-collagenases, in which collagen is increased and regenerated. The energy heats up targeted tissue, stimulating collagen, and elastin within your skin yet is still comfortable with integrated cooling technology.

Why Is Collagen Necessary For Youthful Skin?

Collagen and elastin keep your skin firm, supple and youthful. They begin to breakdown as early as your mid-20s. Most Montclair Sofwave patients begin to notice a loss of skin elasticity and sagging skin starting around age 30.

Combined with the aging effects of gravity, the skin starts to appear tired and haggard, no matter how much sleep you had the night before. The most pronounced effect of collagen loss is the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Expression lines become etched into the skin surface over time as collagen depletes, leading to deep wrinkles and creases that are difficult to erase. The natural deterioration of collagen and elastin is worsened by cumulative sun damage and aging.

A Closer Look at How Sofwave Works

This deviceā€™s proprietary Intense Ultrasound Beam Technologyā„¢ (IUB) reaches below the surface of the skin into the mid-dermal tissue. It is at this depth where the precise temperature of the ultrasound energy stimulates the cells that produce collagen and elastin.

The mid-dermal depth is 1.5 mm below the epidermis (the top layer of skin). IUB effectively and safely targets the selected dermis without affecting the surrounding tissue. Sofwave is effective for the following areas and others:

  • Below the chin
  • Throat
  • Lines and wrinkles at the corners of the mouth
  • Lines and wrinkles in other facial areas
  • Forehead (Lift)
  • Cheeks

Does Sofwave Hurt?

Among prospective patientsā€™ first questions is this: ā€˜Is Sofwave painful? The device has epidermal cooling technology built-in, to provide soothing relief to the skin. It emits 100 ultrasound pulses in a single pass.

There are no sutures, anesthesia, or surgery involved. Afterward, youā€™ll be able to get back to your day. There is no prolonged recovery, nor is there any Sofwave downtime.

What You Can Expect During the Sofwave Procedure

First, youā€™ll meet with us in a consultation to find out whether you are a good candidate for this treatment. Dr. DiBernardo makes sure you are matched with the best treatments for your goals. After examining your face and listening to your concerns, our plastic surgeon can recommend the range of options that will be a good fit.

The treatment itself is straightforward. Youā€™ll relax in the chair while the Sofwave device is passed across the skin in the targeted area. Many people need only a single treatment session to get the results they want. In fact, according to Sofwave, 87 percent of patients experienced improved or significantly improved skin 12 weeks after a single treatment.

Are Sofwave Results Permanent?

Sofwave results are lasting but they do not last forever. No treatment or cosmetic procedure can stop the inevitable effects of gravity as you get older; however, you can maintain great results by opting for touch-ups in the future ā€“ whether surgical, non-surgical, or both.

Because sun damage plays a significant role in the aging of your skin, you can prevent fine lines and wrinkles to an extent by protecting your skin from the sun. Wear sunblock, especially when you will be outdoors for a prolonged period.

How Much Does Sofwave Cost?

The cost of Sofwave treatment is variable. Itā€™s also comparable to some of the other leading non-surgical treatments available today. Once you have visited us for your consultation and the plastic surgeon has made individualized treatment recommendations, weā€™ll provide you with a cost estimate.

A series of Sofwave treatments may be needed to accomplish the results the patient is seeking. Differences in skin quality, elasticity, degree of skin sagging, and wrinkle depth can all impact the number of treatment sessions that are needed to obtain the desired result. In addition to accepting checks, cash, money orders, and major credit cards, New Jersey Plastic Surgery accepts financing plans from CareCredit and PatientFi. Our goal is to make it easy for patients from diverse financial backgrounds to be able to afford the cost of treatments that may improve both their skin and self-confidence. What Is The Difference Between Sofwave And Ultherapy?

Sofwave offers a different experience compared to ultherapy. On rare occasions, patients with a low threshold for pain may fail to complete the full series of ultherapy treatments due to the minimal to moderate discomfort that is associated with the procedure. Terminating treatment early before the full effects take place results renders the treatment less effective.

Meanwhile, Sofwave is painless and has equally high patient satisfaction ratings. Like Sofwave, Ultherapy is FDA approved. However, Ultherapy trials focused on efficacy as a non-surgical brow lift treatment and neck rejuvenation treatment ā€” rather than being approved for the whole face. Both devices use ultrasound facial rejuvenation to support collagen production in the skin.

But Sofwave reaches a skin depth of 1.5 mm where collagen is most abundant, whereas Ulthera reaches up to 4.5 mm. By concentrating ultrasound waves closer to the skin surface where collagen is most prevalent and not going deeper, it minimizes discomfort during treatment. Both Sofwave and Ulthera are excellent options with a diverse range of applications. To get help deciding which treatment is right for you, please contact our team for a consultation today.
