Next time you're trying to guess someone's age, just take a peek at their hands. Sun spots, discoloration, bulging ligaments and sagging skin can add years to an otherwise youthful appearance.

Until recently, little could be done to erase signs of aging on the hands. Fortunately, advances in cosmetic enhancement have made hand rejuvenation a viable possibility.

Hand Rejuvenation Options

Hand rejuvenation, also known as a "hand lift," can take years off your hands in just minutes, with results that can last up to a year or longer.

The rejuvenation process usually involves a combination of procedures. Laser treatments (Fraxel, Thermage, CO2, IPL laser), synthetic fillers (Radiesse, Juvederm, Sculptra) and/or fat transfer are simple, relatively inexpensive ways to improve the tone, texture and quality of your hands.

Laser treatments, such as Fraxel are ideal for uneven pigmentation and wrinkling. Thermage is used for skin tightening. While CO2 and IPL laser are great for targeting undesirable sun spots. A series of treatment sessions are often necessary to achieve desired results.

Synthetic fillers or fat transfer are used to restore volume to hands that appear "skeleton-like." Following injection, immediate results are visible and may improve over time. With synthetic fillers, maintenance treatments are necessary to achieve long-term results. Fat transfer however, usually provides permanent enhancement.

Risks Associated with Hand Rejuvenation

All cosmetic procedures have risks. Though uncommon, laser hand rejuvenation may cause temporary acne breakouts, skin discoloration, inflammation or scarring.

Dermal fillers and fat transfer carry relatively little risk. Some risks include overcorrection or undercorrection, tissue lumps, bleeding or scarring.
