What is a Hair Transplant?
A hair transplant relocates healthy strands of hair from the donor site. The donor site is located on the back and sides of the head. Hair transplants are typically performed on men. However, women who are experiencing an unusual amount of hair loss can benefit from them as well.
The Best Candidates for Hair Transplant
The ideal candidate for a hair transplant will have:
- Moderate to severe thinning of the hair on the front part of the head, also known as a receding hairline
- An adequate amount of hair on the sides or back of the head to use for the transplant
- A healthy scalp
Planning Your Hair Transplant Surgery
It is important to schedule your hair transplant surgery for a time you will be able to stay at home for approximately 1-2 weeks. Feel free to work from home. This procedure is done under local anesthesia. Therefore, you will feel perfectly normal immediately after. We do suggest arranging a ride to and from our facility. This is for your comfort. Headaches are normal post procedure and rest is recommended.
Preparing for Your Hair Transplant Surgery
Our pre-operative consultation appointment will provide you with a list of instructions to follow in the days leading up to your surgery. You will need to avoid smoking and taking blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, for up to two weeks prior to your surgery. The morning of your procedure, you will need to wash your hair and scalp thoroughly with baby shampoo which is a gentle cleanser that removes oils and gently cleanses the scalp.
Types of Anesthesia
Hair transplants are performed under local anesthesia, which numbs only the area being worked on. Patients will be prescribed a prescription for pain and anxiety to help you through the procedure. These medications are not mandatory. However, if you choose to take them you must have a ride home.
The Hair Transplant Procedure
Once the anesthesia kicks in, our specialty trained technicians will go to work harvesting hair follicles from the donor site. These follicles will then be carefully reinserted into the area where balding has occurred. The length of the procedure varies according to the number of grafts being transplanted. Transplanting 2,000 hair grafts can take as long as 8 to 10 hours. Please plan to be at our facility all day.
How Much Does a Hair Transplant Cost?
Hair transplants are highly customized procedures, for this reason prices vary. Cost is broken down per hair graft. During your consultation, Dr. DiBernardo will assess your hair density, we can calculate how many hair grafts you need and provide you with the exact cost. For your convenience, we accept cash, check, Visa®®, Master®Card, American Express® and Discover®. Financing options are also available via CareCredit® and AlphaeonTM.
After Your Hair Transplant Surgery
A follow-up visit is required within 5 to 7 days to ensure you are healing normally. The results will not be visible immediately, as it will take 3 – 5 months for hair to begin re-growing into its transplanted area. You will continue noticing gradual improvement and can expect to see the final results one year post procedure.
Getting Back to Normal Following Hair Transplant Surgery
It’s possible to resume light activity three or four days after your surgery. However, you may need to wait about a week or so before returning to work or performing strenuous tasks. You must wait 48 hours post procedure to wash your hair. For the first two weeks post procedure, you will not let direct pressure from the shower to hit your newly implanted hair grafts. Instead you will use a cup mix with water and baby shampoo together. Gently pour over entire head, rinse until all soap is gone. Hair should air dry and no styling products should be used for 4 weeks.
If you’ve noticed thinning hair in the front of your scalp, a hair transplant can help restore that full head of hair you once enjoyed, thereby allowing you to feel younger and more self-confident.
