What is a Hair Transplant?
Many people who are experiencing balding lose the hair in the front of their scalp first. A hair transplant compensates for this by relocating healthy strands of hair from the sides or back of your head and placing them in front. Hair transplants are typically performed on men. However, women who are experiencing an unusual amount of hair loss can sometimes benefit from them as well.
The Best Candidates for Hair Transplant
The ideal candidate for a hair transplant will have:
- Moderate to severe thinning of the hair on the front part of the head, also known as a receding hairline
- An adequate amount of hair on the sides or back of the head to use for the transplant
- A healthy scalp
Planning Your Hair Transplant Surgery
You must arrange for someone to drive you to and from your appointment. It’s important to schedule your hair transplant surgery for a time when you will be able to stay at home for approximately three or four days. After that time, you will be able to remove bandages from your head and the anesthesia will also have fully left your system, so you should no longer feel lethargic or groggy.
Preparing for Your Hair Transplant Surgery
Dr. DiBernardo will provide you with a list of instructions to follow in the days leading up to your surgery. You will need to avoid smoking and taking blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, for up to two weeks prior to your surgery. The evening before your procedure, you will also need to wash your hair and scalp thoroughly with Hibiclens®, which is a potent antiseptic that sterilizes your scalp and removes residue left behind by other shampoos and styling products.
Types of Anesthesia
Most hair transplants are performed under local anesthesia, which numbs only the area being worked on. Patients who are prone to anxiety attacks may also be provided with a sedative to help them relax.
The Hair Transplant Procedure
Once the anesthesia kicks in, Dr. DiBernardo will go to work harvesting hair follicles from the donor site. These follicles will then be carefully reinserted into the area where balding has occurred. The length of the procedure varies according to the number of grafts being transplanted. Transplanting 2,000 hair grafts can take as long as five to six hours.
How Much Does a Hair Transplant Cost?
Hair transplants are highly customized procedures, which is why it is not possible to provide you with a cost up front. During your consultation Dr. DiBernardo will assess the reason for your hair loss to determine which procedure(s) might be best. At that time, he will be better able to provide you with an accurate cost. For your convenience, we accept cash, check, Visa®®, Master®Card, American Express® and Discover®. Financing options are also available via CareCredit® and AlphaeonTM.
After Your Hair Transplant Surgery
A follow-up visit is required within 10 to 14 days to remove stitches and check for complications. The results will not be visible immediately, as it will take a few weeks for hair to begin re-growing into its transplanted area. You will continue noticing gradual improvement and can expect to see the final results within a few months.
Getting Back to Normal Following Hair Transplant Surgery
You should wait at least 48 hours before shampooing your hair. After that time, you can wash and style your hair as usual. It’s possible to resume light activity three or four days after your surgery. However, you may need to wait about a week or so before returning to work or performing strenuous tasks.
If you’ve noticed thinning hair in the front of your scalp, a hair transplant can help restore that full head of hair you once enjoyed, thereby allowing you to feel younger and more self-confident. Residents of Bloomfield, Essex County, and Morristown should contact New Jersey Plastic Surgery® in Montclair, NJ to schedule a consultation.
