What is a Hair Transplant?

The Best Candidates for Hair Transplant

The ideal candidate for a hair transplant will have:

  • Moderate to severe thinning of the hair on the front part of the head, also known as a receding hairline
  • An adequate amount of hair on the sides or back of the head to use for the transplant
  • A healthy scalp

How Much Does a Hair Transplant Cost?

Hair transplants are highly customized procedures, for this reason, prices vary. The cost is broken down per hair graft. During your consultation for a hair transplant Montclair plastic surgeon, Dr. DiBernardo will assess your hair density, we can calculate how many hair grafts you need and provide you with the exact cost. For your convenience, we accept cash, check, Visa®®, Master®Card, American Express®, and Discover®. Financing options are also available via CareCredit®.

After Your Hair Transplant Surgery

A follow-up visit is required within 5 to 7 days to ensure you are healing normally.

The results will not be visible immediately, as it will take 3 - 5 months for the hair to begin re-growing into its transplanted area. You will continue noticing gradual improvement and can expect to see the final results one-year post-procedure.

The Hair Transplant Procedure

Once the anesthesia kicks in, our specially trained technicians will go to work harvesting hair follicles from the donor site.

These follicles will then be carefully reinserted into the area where balding has occurred. The length of the procedure varies according to the number of grafts being transplanted. Transplanting 2,000 hair grafts can take as long as 8 to 10 hours. Please plan to be at our facility all day.

Getting Back to Normal Following Hair Transplant Surgery

It’s possible to resume light activity three or four days after your surgery. However, you may need to wait about a week or so before returning to work or performing strenuous tasks. You must wait 48 hours post-procedure to wash your hair.

For the first two weeks post-procedure, you will not let direct pressure from the shower to hit your newly implanted hair grafts. Instead, you will use a cup mix with water and baby shampoo together. Gently pour over the entire head, rinse until all soap is gone. Hair should air dry and no styling products should be used for 4 weeks.

If you’ve noticed thinning hair in the front of your scalp, a hair transplant can help restore that full head of hair you once enjoyed, thereby allowing you to feel younger and more self-confident. Residents of Essex County and surrounding areas should contact New Jersey Plastic Surgery® in Montclair, NJ to schedule a consultation.

Hair Transplant FAQs

Montclair, NJ residents, often have questions about the various hair restoration procedures that are available. These individuals turn to New Jersey Plastic Surgery®, serving patients from Bloomfield, Essex County, Morristown, and the surrounding communities, for solid answers to those questions.

Anyone who is in generally good health with no underlying scalp conditions may undergo hair restoration. Even so, the best possible results come whenever there is a sufficient amount of hair on either the sides or back of the head. In some cases, hair may be transplanted from other areas of the body, although doing so is rarely done.

Although it is more commonly performed on men, hair restoration may also be performed on women.

Since hair transplants use your own hair, they provide very natural-looking results. Your new hair can be combed, washed, and styled just like your other hair.

A hair transplant will only fill in bald spots. If additional hair follicles stop producing, you could notice balding again in the future. Many of our patients who experience subsequent balding will undergo a second procedure to help them eliminate it.

Hair that has been transplanted has simply been moved from one location to another. As such, there are no special considerations when it comes to styling or caring for it.

Each person experiences hair loss differently and will, therefore, require a unique treatment program. During your consultation, Dr. DiBernardo will assess the amount of hair loss you have and then tailor a hair restoration procedure especially for you. At that time, he will be better able to provide you with an accurate cost. For your convenience, we accept cash, check, Visa®, Master®Card, American Express®, and Discover®. Financing options are also available via CareCredit®.
