Eyelid Surgery – Blepharoplasty
Age and genetics can both play a role in the shape and proportion of your upper and lower eyelids. An eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty, precisely targets the area around the eye, minimizing the signs of aging and producing a more youthful and rested appearance.
If you would like to learn more about eyelid surgery, please contact New Jersey Plastic Surgery today online or at 973-509-2000 to schedule a free consultation. We serve patients from Montclair, Clifton, and Newark, New Jersey, in addition to patients from across the U.S. and worldwide.
What Issues Can Eyelid Surgery Address?
Both age and heredity can influence the shape and proportion of your eyelids. As you grow older, your upper eyelids may begin to droop and bags may begin to form beneath your lower eyelids. The combination of wrinkles, sagging, frown lines, and excess fatty tissue around the eyes can hinder your natural range of facial expressions. You may feel energetic and invigorated but only communicate exhaustion and dissatisfaction.
More than just the look of your eyelids, blepharoplasty can rejuvenate your facial appearance by addressing:
- Fine lines across your lower eyelids
- Drooping lower eyelids
- Bags under your eyes
- Puffy eyelids
- Upper eyelids that droop into your field of vision
- Sagging skin obscuring your upper eyelids
With nearly 30 years of experience, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Barry DiBernardo has honed his surgical skill and established a reputation for quality and care. He applies his years of experience with precision and an artful eye to remove excess skin, fat, and muscle from both the upper and lower eyelids.
Am I a Candidate For Blepharoplasty?
The eyes should have a natural, non-surgical appearance. The upper lid, lower lid, and brow should be aesthetically balanced, with similar degrees of laxity and aging.
The best candidates for eyelift surgery suffer from puffiness or sagginess in the upper lids and bags in the lower lids. Depending on your unique goals, Dr. DiBernardo may recommend a procedure to address the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.
Typically, good eyelid lift candidates:
- Are in generally good health
- Do not have serious eye conditions
- Do not smoke
- Want to eliminate droopy, baggy eyelids
- Have hindered vision due to loose skin around the eyes
- Experience wrinkles or excess skin around the eyelids
- Are prepared to undergo plastic surgery and closely adhere to pre and postoperative instructions
Many patients choose to combine an eyelid lift with a facelift. Dr. DiBernardo will discuss your goals, expectations, and possible combination surgeries during your initial consultation.
Eyelid Surgery Recovery
Dr. DiBernardo will provide you with detailed instructions for your eyelid surgery recovery. As an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. DiBernardo has experience and skill in the area of facial rejuvenation, you can typically expect a quick and hassle-free recovery.
Your lids will tighten at first but soon relax. For the day or two following your eyelid surgery, you may feel some minor discomfort at the incision sites. Your vision may be slightly blurred from swelling, but this quickly subsides.
Using a cold compress and elevating your head for the first 24 hours alleviates some discomfort. Dr. DiBernardo will prescribe the necessary ointments and drops you will need. Wearing dark sunglasses can enhance comfort during this time.
Stitches are usually removed in about a week after surgery and you can expect to return to work and normal activities within 7 days.
Results typically last 10 to 20 years.
Your Blepharoplasty Consultation
During your initial consultation, Dr. DiBernardo will take the time to discuss your concerns and goals. He will examine your eyelids, review your medical history, and determine if blepharoplasty is right for you. Be prepared to discuss the following topics:
- Is your vision inhibited because of sagging eyelids?
- What changes would you like to see?
- What are your expectations for your final results?
- Are you considering combing your eyelid lift with other procedures or non-surgical treatments?
- Are you able to take time off from work, and avoid certain types of exercise and other activities?
