Breast Lift

Over time the breasts, as well as other areas of the body, are prone to sagging and drooping. Many factors can cause this, but thankfully it can be reversed with a breast lift procedure by New Jersey Plastic Surgery. We are located in Montclair, and expertly serve the residents of Bloomfield, Essex, and Morristown counties.

What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift is a term used to describe the surgical procedure where the breasts are lifted, and excess skin and fat is removed to give them a rejuvenated, more youthful, and perky appearance. The official medical term is a mastopexy. Loss of volume, elasticity, or plumpness can leave women feeling unfulfilled, self-conscious, or unhappy with their appearance. Undergoing a breast lift surgery can give your breasts a more youthful appearance. The procedure will vary depending on each patient's desired results and existing breast mass and positioning. Oftentimes, women choose to combine this procedure with breast implants to give their breasts a more voluminous appearance.

Benefits of a Breast Lift

As we age, our breasts often lose firmness and elasticity due to gravity, weight changes, breastfeeding, and lifestyle choices. Women whose breasts are drooping, sagging, appear elongated, or have downward pointing nipples may benefit from a mastopexy. This procedure is particularly ideal for women who naturally have full breasts, but would like to lift them to make them appear younger and more vivacious.

The Best Candidates for Breast Lifts

If you are dissatisfied with the current appearance of your breasts and wish for them to appear higher, fuller, and livelier, you are a good candidate for a breast lift. If you feel you have any of the following characteristics, a breast lift may be your ideal solution.

  • Sagging, drooping breasts
  • Nipples that point downward or are located under the breast fold
  • Oversized areolas
  • Breasts that have lost mass and elasticity due to pregnancy, weight gain, or similar reasons
  • Breasts that are naturally elongated

It is important to remember that qualifying candidates must be adults in good standing health who have realistic expectations and goals.

Planning Your Breast Lift Surgery

We always recommend patients sit down and deeply consider what their desired outcome is prior to coming into the office. It is necessary to have reasonable expectations and little to no health problems before you have this surgery. During the course of your confidential consultation, you will have the chance to bring up any questions, fears, or concerns, as well as discuss in detail what your desired results are.

Preparing for Your Breast Lift Surgery

When you meet with one of our extraordinary breast surgeons, you will have the opportunity to discuss all your health conditions and normal lifestyle activities. You will be provided with a list of recommendations and restrictions that you will be expected to following prior to having surgery. These are related to eating, drinking, smoking, and any medication or vitamins you may be taking. Once you have scheduled your surgery, you will need to find a family member or loved one who will be available to pick you after the procedure, and help you around the house for a few days during the recovery period.

The Breast Lift Procedure

A mastopexy is most commonly performed under general anesthesia though a local anesthetic may be combined with a sedative to make you drowsy. As every individual's needs vary, the procedure is often tailored to meet your distinct needs. The most common technique includes an anchor-shaped incision that follows the natural curve of the breast. Once the incisions are made, the doctor will remove the excess tissue and skin, resituate the areola and nipple if necessary, and then pull the skin taut and close the incisions. Women who have smaller breasts, or require a minimal amount of skin removal can use what is called the donut mastopexy, during which an incision is made around the areola, and then the surrounding skin is removed in a donut shape.

Getting Back to Normal Following Breast Lift Surgery

After your surgery, you will have to refrain from certain activities, tasks, and movements. You will be restricted from any lifting for several weeks. Following the procedure, a surgical bra or bandage will be worn. Once it is removed, a soft bra must be worn 24 hours a day for the next few weeks. It is important to remember to follow the exact directions and instructions given by the doctor to help your recovery period go as smooth as possible.
