What is Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)?
Otoplasty, otherwise known as ear surgery, is a surgical procedure that changes the size and appearance of a patient’s ears. In many cases, this procedure pins back ears that are protruding, reduces their size or reshapes them to improve symmetry.
This procedure is often requested for cosmetic reasons though some patients seek out an otoplasty to correct misshapen ears to assist with hearing.
The Best Candidates for Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)
Otoplasty is recommended for patients between the ages of four to 14, but people of all ages may consult with New Jersey Plastic Surgery® about a possible ear surgery. This procedure greatly improves the self-image and confidence of patients who feel insecure about the size and/or shape of their ears. An otoplasty procedure can help correct protruding ears or ears that appear large in shape, which can aid in helping your child improve their self-esteem and avoid bullying.
Planning for Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)
At New Jersey Plastic Surgery®, we recommend that you and your child consult with a surgeon to discuss expectations for results of an otoplasty. Ultimately, the choice for surgery should be left up to the child and whether or not they feel a need to go through with the procedure.
During the consultation, you and your child will learn about the technique that will be used during the surgery and what the healing process will be like. We recommend that you speak openly with your child about the procedure and allow them to make the choice themselves.
Types of Anesthesia
When operating on younger children, it is typically best that general anesthesia is used. Your child will sleep through the procedure and wake when the surgery is finished, without feeling any pain. Your surgeon will discuss this with you in greater detail during your consultation.
The Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) Procedure
Otoplasty will be performed by making a small incision at the back of the ear to reveal the ear cartilage, allowing it to be reshaped. Stitches will hold the patient’s ears back, pinning them into place. The marks from the incision are naturally hidden within the fold behind the ear.
By removing cartilage, skin and other tissues, the size of the ears can be reshaped, making them more proportionate to the patient’s overall features. During your consultation, you will learn the details of the procedure and exactly what techniques will be performed.
How Much Does an Otoplasty (Ear Surgery) Cost?
Ear surgery is considered to be elective, so most insurance providers won’t cover the costs. To help make ear surgery affordable and accessible for everyone, New Jersey Plastic Surgery® offers financing options. For your convenience, we accept cash, check, Visa®, Master®Card, American Express® and Discover®. Financing options via CareCredit® and AlphaeonTM are also available.
Getting Back to Normal After Ear Surgery
The incisions made during the procedure will be closed with stitches and a soft bandage will be wrapped over and around the ears to keep them in the desired position. This bandage will also protect them until they heal. Wrapping can be removed in a week or so, along with the stitches. The shape and structure of your new ears will be visible immediately.
Adults who undergo ear surgery should expect to stay at home for approximately five days and children will need to stay home from school for about a week. Full healing can take up to four to six weeks, and it is recommended that you take it easy and protect your ears during the healing process.
An otoplasty can help you regain a more proportionate look, as well as your self-confidence. If you live in or around Bloomfield, Essex County or Morristown and considering undergoing an otoplasty, contact New Jersey Plastic Surgery® in Montclair, NJ, today to set up an appointment.
