The effects of aging can cause brow lines to droop and sag, detracting from your personal sense of confidence. Located in Montclair, NJ, New Jersey Plastic Surgery® performs brow lift surgery for the residents in and around Bloomfield, Essex County, Morristown and the surrounding communities. The brow lift, also called forehead lift, can restore your self-confidence and make you feel younger with a smoother, more youthful appearance.
What is a Brow Lift?
The brow lift, or forehead lift, is a minimally invasive procedure designed to smooth and restore your forehead to a more youthful state. The purpose of this procedure is to erase lines and sagging skin on the forehead that may cause you to look tired, sad or angry.
There are two types of brow lift (forehead lift) procedures, including the traditional brow lift and endoscopic brow lift. The traditional brow lift entails removing excess skin with a single incision across the hairline.
The endoscopic method involves multiple, tiny incisions and removal of tissue to smoothen the brow and erase signs of wrinkles. The information below will help you understand more about the procedures offered at New Jersey Plastic Surgery®. A consultation is recommended to determine which procedure is right for you.
The Best Candidates for a Brow Lift
A brow lift, or forehead lift, most commonly are performed on patients between the ages of 40 and 60 years old, but can be considered for people of all ages. A consultation is highly recommended if you are considering a brow lift (forehead lift), but you may be a good candidate if you have:
- Frown lines and forehead wrinkles
- Bunched or furrowed skin over your nose
- Sagging brows above your upper eyelid
- Low-hanging eyebrows
- Eyebrow abnormality, including asymmetrical eyebrows
Forehead lifts are often performed in conjunction with facelifts and other procedures, including eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty. A forehead lift sometimes presents a more desirable option rather than undergoing eyelid surgery.
Planning your Brow Lift Surgery
To determine if a brow lift (forehead lift) will improve your appearance, gently pull your skin upward to lift your forehead and brow area. Essentially, a brow lift (forehead lift) will smoothen your skin in much the same way, with minimal scarring.
A consultation will determine your bone structure and skin type, allowing New Jersey Plastic Surgery® to perform the best type of procedure for your face. Further discussion about any drugs or medication you may currently be taking and associated costs of the procedure will also be conducted during the consultation. You will be asked to relate concerns or questions regarding the procedure.
Preparing for your Brow Lift Surgery
New Jersey Plastic Surgery® will provide you with detailed instructions to prepare for your brow lift procedure. These instructions will include guidelines related to dietary concerns, smoking and directions about vitamins or medications you should either take or avoid. It is important that these guidelines are strictly followed before and after the surgery.
Types of Anesthesia
At New Jersey Plastic Surgery®, a local anesthesia is used for brow lift surgeries, as well as a sedative for relaxation. You will not feel pain, but rather drowsy and relaxed while remaining awake. You may elect for general anesthesia as an option, which will allow you to sleep during the procedure.
Your Brow Lift Procedure
During your consultation, New Jersey Plastic Surgery® will discuss which method of brow lift surgery is right for you. The following descriptions will give you an idea of what you can expect from each procedure.
- Classic forehead lift: A coronal incision will be made at ear level and extend around the top of the forehead along the hairline toward the other ear. Scarring is very minimal in this procedure, as the incision is hidden by the hairline making the scar imperceptible to the naked eye. With the incision, the forehead skin will be lifted. Excess skin will be removed, allowing your eyebrows to also potentially be lifted. The result is a younger, smoother look that will bring a more relaxed and refreshed appearance to your face.
- Endoscopic forehead lift: This procedure involves the use of three to five tiny incisions in the scalp, instead of the coronal incision outlined in the classic forehead lift. A scoping camera device, called an endoscope, will be used to view the area underneath your skin, allowing your surgeon to remove facial and muscle tissue to tighten and smoothen your brow. If an eyebrow lift is also desired for this procedure, they will be lifted and secured with the use of sutures or temporary screws behind your hairline. Once these incisions are healed, scarring will be minimal if any, and you will enjoy a more youthful, smooth appearance along your brow.
How Much Does a Brow Lift Cost?
Brow lifts are considered to be elective, so most insurance providers won’t cover the costs. To help make brow lifts affordable and accessible for everyone, New Jersey Plastic Surgery® offers financing options. For your convenience, we accept cash, check, Visa®, Master®Card, American Express® and Discover®. Financing options via CareCredit® and AlphaeonTM are available as well.
After Your Brow Lift Procedure
Depending on the type of procedure you undergo (a classic or endoscopic brow lift), your recovery time may vary. Following your surgery, patients who undergo a classic forehead lift may expect light discomfort along the hairline where the incision was made. This can be mediated with the assistance of prescription medication. You will need to keep your head elevated for several days after your procedure, to keep swelling at a minimum. It is common to experience some swelling in the cheeks and eyes for the first week.
In the following six months, you can expect to experience itching on the top of the scalp and some temporary thinning along the hairline.
Patients using an endoscopic procedure may experience discomfort at the sites of the incision, though, with the use of prescription medication, this discomfort can be kept to a minimum. Mild swelling, itching, and numbness may also be experienced as a result of this procedure.
Getting Back to Normal Following Brow Lift Surgery
Patients undergoing a brow lift (forehead lift) surgery can expect to move around normally in just a couple of days. However, you may feel discomfort for a week following the surgery and should expect to take it easy as much as possible, returning to work within 10 days or less.
It is recommended that brow lift patients also limit their exposure to sun or heat for a few months following surgery. It is also important to allow yourself to heal properly and avoid physical exertion as you recover to your normal state. As your facial tissue heals, you will notice a smoother and more youthful look, resulting in an elevated sense of self-confidence.
