What is a Hair Transplant?

Most balding people lose hair in the front part of their scalp first. A hair transplant works by removing hairs from the sides and back of the head and transplanting them to the front of the head. These hairs take root and function exactly as hairs once did in the thinning or bald area. Men are the most frequent hair transplant recipients, but women also have hair transplants when they experience hair loss.

The Hair Transplant Procedure

After the anesthesia has taken effect, Dr. DiBernardo will begin harvesting hair follicles from the donor region for transplant to the front part of the scalp. These harvested follicles are then transplanted to areas that are thinning or bald. How long the procedure takes depends upon how many follicles need to be transplanted. For example, a transplant involving 2,000 hair grafts can take up to six hours.

Getting Back to Normal Following Hair Transplant Surgery

After your hair transplant procedure, you should avoid shampooing for a minimum of 48 hours, as your scalp will be quite sensitive at this time while it begins healing. Once the initial 48 hours has passed, you may wash and style your hair as normal. You may also begin resuming light activity when three or four days has passed post-surgery. It is important to wait about one week before you resume work or vigorous activities.

If your hair has been noticeable thinning, a hair transplant can provide you with a full head of hair, letting you feel more youthful and self-confident.
