What is Hair Loss?
A human head can contain as many as 100,000 hairs. The average person sheds between 60 and 100 hairs per day. Someone who is experiencing hair loss may shed greater than that amount and may also find that hair does not regrow after it has fallen out, leading to bald patches or even a receding hairline. It is estimated that as many as 40 percent of all adults over the age of 40 are experiencing some form of hair loss. Hair loss is more common among men, although women are affected to a lesser degree.
Services we offer for people suffering from hair loss are:
The Best Candidates for Hair Loss Surgery
To be considered a good candidate for any of our hair restoration procedures, you should have a sufficient amount of hair available in one or more donor sites. It’s also important that you have realistic expectations about your procedure. While the treatments we offer can help restore a lustrous, full head of hair, they cannot prevent future hair loss due to genetics, hormonal changes or treatment for a disease such as cancer.
Planning Your Hair Loss Surgery
Each procedure requires a different amount of recovery time afterwards. This will be discussed with you during your consultation so that you can schedule your procedure accordingly.
Preparing for Your Hair Loss Surgery
You will be provided instructions on washing your hair, as well as any vitamins or medications to avoid in the days leading up to your surgery.
Types of Anesthesia
Most procedures can be performed with only a local anesthetic. Many require only a topical numbing agent while more advanced procedures such as PRP therapy do not require any anesthesia whatsoever.
How much Does Hair Loss Surgery Cost?
Hair loss surgeries are highly customized procedures, which is why it is not possible to provide you with a cost up front. During your consultation Dr. DiBernardo will assess the amount of hair loss you have and then determine which procedure might be best for you. At that time, he will be better able to provide you with an accurate cost. For your convenience, we accept cash, check, Visa®, Master®Card, American Express® and Discover®. Financing options are also available via CareCredit® and AlphaeonTM.
After Your Hair Loss Surgery
There may be restrictions on things such as:
- The amount of physical activity you may perform
- How and when you are able to wash your hair
- Wearing headgear
You will be provided with a list of instructions to follow once you leave our office. Dr. DiBernardo will also discuss aftercare with you during your consultation, as this is one way he helps you ensure you have chosen the right procedure.
Getting Back to Normal Following Hair Loss Surgery
Results from hair loss surgery are not noticed immediately. Rather, they are seen gradually as new hair begins to grow in areas that were previously bald or thinning. Since the results happen so gradually, many people may not realize you have had a procedure, even though they do notice your fuller, thicker head of hair.
If you have noticed thinning hair or balding, this is not something you are destined to live with, as hair loss surgery can often restore the full head of hair you once enjoyed. Residents of Bloomfield, Essex County, and Morristown should contact New Jersey Plastic Surgery® in Montclair, NJ to schedule a hair loss surgery consultation.
