Sculptra® is a dermal filler that provides a long lasting alternative to the wide variety of other injectable products we offer at New Jersey Plastic Surgery.
This dermal filler can be used for a targeted wrinkle correction or for restoring overall volume in your skin.
What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is made with an injectable polymer substance called poly-L-lactic acid, a chemical derived from the alpha-hydroxy acid family. Originally used for medical indications, Sculptra is proven to reduce the symptoms of facial lipoatrophy (localized degradation of the tissue).
In a cosmetic application, Sculptra can correct or reduce the appearance of age-related wrinkles and other contour abnormalities.
When to Consider Treatment with Sculptra
The FDA has approved Sculptra aesthetic for treatment of shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles. The nasolabial folds are distinct lines that travel from the nose to each side of the mouth.
Plastic surgeons have also used Sculptra for treatment of:
- Marionette lines
- Chin wrinkles
- Sunken cheeks, temples
During a consultation at New Jersey plastic surgery, we can determine if Sculptra is right for you and whether it will meet your cosmetic goals. Because it works gradually, Sculptra is not recommended for patients who want an instant wrinkle correction. It’s also not recommended for patients with a skin infection at the injection site or a known allergy to the ingredients.
How Sculptra Aesthetic Works
According to the manufacturer, sanofi-aventis, Sculptra Aesthetic is intended for use in a one-time treatment regimen of up to 4 injection sessions that are scheduled about 3 weeks apart.
The doctor uses a deep dermal grid pattern (cross-hatch) injection technique to administer the treatment. Under the skin, Sculptra simulates production of fibroblasts, which produce collagen. This gradual process of collagen deposition will delay the results you get from Sculptra, so your first treatment will be very conservative. After the doctor evaluates the initial results, the treatment is modified accordingly.
A Long-Lasting Correction
With 3 or 4 monthly Sculptra treatments, patients can achieve a correction lasting two years.
Does Sculptra have any side effects?
The most common side effects (reported during clinical trials) include redness, swelling, tenderness, injection site pain, bruising, bleeding, and itching. Ask the doctor for more information about Sculptra side effects.
