What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift corrects the signs of aging that occurs as the skin around the jawline sags, and fat deposits begin to collect around the neck. This procedure tightens the skin and neck muscles using incisions hidden in front of and behind the ear. A neck lift can rejuvenate your look, refreshing your appearance and giving you a younger and more elegant look. If you are feeling self-conscious about folds and sagging around your neck, a neck lift can improve your confidence.

The Best Candidates for a Neck Lift

Most patients who elect for a neck lift are men and women between the ages of 40 and 60. However, a neck lift can be an option for patients well into their 70s or 80s. If you have noticed sagging skin around your neck and face, you may find that a neck lift will improve your self-esteem. New Jersey Plastic Surgery® will consult with you to identify your bone structure and skin elasticity and will discuss with you the results you can expect from a neck lift procedure.

Planning Your Neck Lift Surgery

Your neck lift surgery will be tailored specifically for you since no two patients are exactly alike. Your surgeon will discuss your desired results for this procedure and identify any underlying conditions that may cause complications. During your consultation, your surgeon will ask about your medical history in order to rule out blood clotting problems, high blood pressure or other complications that may cause significant scarring.

Your surgeon will discuss with you the techniques that will be used during the procedure, as well as the type of anesthesia that will be used. Instructions for before and after your surgery will also be given to you. During your consultation, your surgeon will address any questions or concerns you might have regarding the neck lift surgery.

Preparing For Your Neck Lift Surgery

During your consultation, you will be given specific instructions to prepare for your surgery. If you smoke, you will be asked not to do so for a predetermined amount of time before and after your surgery. There may also be other guidelines provided concerning certain medications, vitamins or daily habits.

It is important that you arrange for someone to drive you home and care for you following your neck lift surgery. You may require assistance for a few days and it is recommended that you arrange for adequate care for your recovery period.

Types of Anesthesia

Most neck lift procedures require only local anesthesia, as well as a sedative to make sure you remain comfortable and pain-free. Your face will be numb during the procedure though you may feel some tugging sensations. General anesthesia may be available if you prefer to sleep during your neck lift surgery.

The Neck Lift Procedure

Every neck lift surgery is unique and sometimes requires two separate sessions. Your surgeon will discuss the specific techniques that will be used for your neck lift during your consultation.

You may expect your procedure to take several hours. Your surgeon will make an incision around your earlobe, using your hairline as a guide in order to hide subsequent scarring. Your skin will be separated from the underlying muscle and fat, which will then be trimmed, tightened or suctioned to restore your natural contour.

There may be some fluid pooling beneath your skin after your surgery, requiring the use of thin tubes to provide drainage. Your head will be wrapped in bandages in order to manage swelling and bruising. You will feel some discomfort following the procedure.

How Much Does a Neck Lift Cost?

A neck lift is considered to be elective, so most insurance providers won’t cover the costs. To help make neck lift surgery affordable and accessible for everyone, New Jersey Plastic Surgery® offers financing options. For your convenience, we accept cash, check, Visa®, Master®Card, American Express® and Discover®. Financing options via CareCredit® and Alphaeon are also available.

After Your Neck Lift Surgery

You can expect to feel very little discomfort after your surgery. Any pain you do have will be managed by prescribed medications. Following the procedure, your skin will continue to feel numb, which will subside gradually over the next several weeks. Contact your surgeon if you continue to experience serious pain or discomfort after your surgery.

After four to five days your bandages and any drainage tubes will be removed. You can expect for your face to look bruised, puffy and pale. However, as you recover, you will begin to see the results of the neck lift surgery. Though your stitches will be removed after only about five days, you may retain metal clips or stitches in your hairline for a few days longer.

Getting Back to Normal Following a Neck Lift Surgery

You should expect to take it easy for a week following your surgery though you will have some mobility within only a day or two. Be gentle with your face and hair during your recovery, since it will take some time for your skin to heal and it will feel numb and tender.

You will be provided with specific instructions to follow during your recovery time, which will include avoiding strenuous activities for a few weeks, as well as avoiding alcohol, smoking, steam baths and saunas. You will need to give your body the care and attention it needs to enable it to heal properly. It is recommended that you get plenty of rest, as your body will tire easily.

Your face will not resume its normal look for a few weeks after your surgery. You may have difficulty making certain facial expressions and there will be some bruising that will linger during this time. You can expect to return to work and normal life within 10 days after your procedure though you will need to continue to give yourself time to recover.
