What are Warts?
Many people have them, but few know that warts are actually benign growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They appear as small, rough, raised patches of skin or mucous membrane, and can develop practically anywhere on the body.
A few examples and common locations of the more than one hundred different types of warts include:
- Common warts – most often on the hands
- Flat warts – commonly on the hands, face, wrists and knees
- Periungal warts – around or under finger and toe nails
- Plantar warts – grows on the bottom of the foot
What Causes Warts?
All warts are caused by HPV, which is transmitted by skin-to-skin contact. Cuts and tears in the skin are a common entry site for the virus. As a sexually transmitted disease (STD), genital warts are transferred by skin-to-skin exposure of the genitals. It is also possible to contract HPV through oral sex.
