Rosacea

What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is often a source of anxiety and embarrassment for those affected by the skin disorder. The common skin condition causes redness of the cheeks, forehead and/or chin; visible blood vessels and small bumps and pimples.

The nose may become especially bumpy and swollen. Outbreaks can also occur on neck, chest, ears or scalp, and are triggered by certain foods and stress.

What Causes Rosacea?

The cause of rosacea is unknown. Foods that trigger rosacea outbreaks include:

  • Hot peppers and alcohol, particularly red wine
  • Horseradish, tomatoes
  • Monosodium glutamate
  • Hot beverages like coffee, tea and hot chocolate

Contributing factors and common characteristics in cases of rosacea:

  • Onset after age 30
  • Redness may come and go
  • Outbreaks become more intense and persistent with time
  • More common in fair-skinned individuals

What Treats Rosacea?

The cure for rosacea is also unknown. Treatment options include:

  • Photorejuvenation, intense pulsed-light
  • Antibiotics
  • Daily use of sunscreen
  • Avoidance of trigger foods
