Psoriasis

What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that triggers inflammation of T cells (a type of white blood cell). The inflammation causes skin cells to grow rapidly, which leads to the development of raised patches and red lesions on the skin.

The lesions are often covered with a silvery white scale and can be found most often on the lower back, elbows, knees and scalp. Psoriasis can also appear on the elbows, knees, scalp. The disease is not contagious.

There are five types of psoriasis, the first of which is the most common type:

  • Plaque
  • Guttate
  • Inverse
  • Pustular
  • Erythrodermic

  • Sun exposure
  • Alcoholism
  • Medications
  • Stress
  • Strep infection
