Nail Fungus

What is Nail Fungus?

Scientifically known as onychomycosis (OM), nail fungus occurs when one or more finger or toe nails are infected with fungi.

You know you have a case of nail fungus when your nail changes in color, begins to crumble, grows thick, changes in shape, and/or separates from the nail bed. An infected nail may also emit a foul odor and feel sensitive to pressure.

Nail fungus is by three main classes of fungi:

  • Dermatophytes
  • Yeasts
  • Nondermatophyte molds

What Causes Nail Fungus?

Causes and contributing factors that can lead to nail fungus:

  • Injury to the nail or nail bed
  • Family history
  • Increasing age
  • Poor health
  • Immunosuppression
  • Occlusive footwear

What Treats Nail Fungus?

  • Topical antifungals (Lamisil or Tinactin)
  • Oral therapy (Lamisil or Sporanox)
  • Surgery
