Moles

What are Moles?

Pigmented skin spots called moles, or nevi, can appear anywhere on the skin or mucous membranes, even the nail beds.

They may appear light or dark in color, and may be raised or flat. Moles are usually three to five millimeters in diameter and are usually benign pigmentations.

Large moles are at a higher risk for becoming cancerous, but it is a good idea to check both small and large moles on a monthly basis for changes.

Changes in the border, shape, color, size, or texture may be signs of skin cancer. Bleeding, itching or ulceration should also be taken as a warning sign.

What Causes Moles?

  • Light skin
  • Sun exposure
