Melasma

What is Melasma?

Melasma appears on the skin as dark patches of skin, or hyperpigmentations, often on the upper lip or along the edges of the face.

Melasma may develop in either the epidermis, dermis, or a combination of both skin layers. Because the disorder can change a person’s appearance, melasma can be challenging emotionally and psychologically.

What Causes Melasma?

Though there is no one direct cause of melanoma, there are several factors associated with the condition:

  • Pregnancy
  • Oral contraceptive pills
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Ultraviolet radiation
  • Darker complexions
  • Photosensitizing medications
  • Mild ovarian or thyroid dysfunction
  • Certain cosmetics

What Treats Melasma?

  • Hydroquinone
  • Tretinoin
  • Azelaic acid
  • Chemical peels
  • Octadece dioic acid (ODA)
  • Strict sun avoidance
  • Daily use of broad spectrum sunscreen, at least SPF 30
