Herpes

What is Herpes Simplex Virus?

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) causes sores and blisters on different areas of the body, typically the mouth and nose.  The virus becomes dormant, but can return in future outbreaks.

The two main types of herpes are HSV-1 and HSV-2.

HSV-1 outbreaks occur above the waist, and the virus that originally caused the infection moves to the nerve cells near the ear where it becomes dormant. Some people have no symptoms, while others get cold sores for a week or more. HSV-2 is an STD.
