What is Athlete’s Foot?
Athlete’s foot is so common that many people practically overlook what it is and how it spreads. This common skin disease is caused by the tinea fungus that affects the feet, in between the toes.
Fungus likes to grow in areas of the body that are humid, warm and dark, and the feet offer the perfect environment. Athletic facilities like public pools, showers, and locker rooms, are hot spots for contracting athlete’s foot because they are usually both humid and warm.
If your feet or toes itch and burn, and the skin there is cracked and peeling, you may have a case of athlete’s foot.
What Causes Athlete’s Foot?
You may be at risk for contracting infection by the tine fungus if you meet one or more of the following conditions:
- Previous tine infection (ringworm, jock itch, or nail fungus)
- Family history
- Poor foot hygiene
