What is Acne?
Acne, a common condition characterized by pimples, happens when sebaceous glands become inflamed or infected.
There are two general acne types: non-inflammatory and inflammatory.
Non-inflammatory acne includes whiteheads blackheads, while inflammatory acne includes lesions that are often larger, deeper and more tender. These include red blemishes, papules, pustules and nodules.
What Causes Acne?
Causes and contributing factors of acne include:
- Shedding of dead skin cells
- Overproduction of sebum
- Irritation of hair follicles
- Buildup of bacteria
- Hormonal changes
- Exposure to greasy substances
- Friction or pressure against the skin
- Heredity
- Some medications
What Treats Acne?
Some common acne treatments include:
- OTC treatments with benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and other known acne fighters
- Prescription products, such as Tretinoin, that are derived from Vitamin A
- Antibiotics that reduce bacteria and inflammation
- Light or laser therapies that target bacteria or damage the sebaceous glands
