New Jersey Plastic Surgery has recently added Cellulaze™ to the practice. This new technology goes beyond traditional treatments for cellulite, straight to the root of the problem, to reduce the appearance of cellulite.
“Until now, it has not been possible to treat cellulite effectively, but with the introduction of Cellulaze, we can finally give our patients the results they’ve been looking for,” said Dr. Barry DiBernardo. “I’m thrilled to be able to add this to my practice, providing my patients with one-stop for all their cosmetic needs.”
Cellulaze is ideal for treating patients who, despite a healthy diet and exercise, retain the appearance of cellulite. Cellulaze gets to the core of the problem by targeting the cause beneath the skin. First, it delivers laser energy to the dermis, producing thicker skin and increased elasticity. It also thermally subscises fibrotic bands that pull down on the skin. on the skin. Lastly, it contours for the
improvement of herniated pockets or lumps of fat.
Cellulaze offers a new approach to the way physicians think about cellulite and as a result, treat cellulite. By utilizing this technology, and working with a skilled and qualified physician, patients are now able to achieve long-lasting results they never thought possibleall from one simple treatment. Patients usually see improvements within a few weeks, with the most dramatic improvements continuing to show for a few months following the procedure.

A recent story from msnbc and the Associated Press has cast a new light on the renewing capabilities of laser surgery.
Bryon Widner had left his white supremacist lifestyle behind when he decided that facial tattoos were no longer a proper reflection of his identity.
Looking like a thug wasn’t in line with his new priorities: holding a job and doing his part to support his family.
After searching the web in vain for a safe way to remove tattoos, he reached out to a group call the Southern Poverty Law Center. The group helped him find a solution and a a donor who would help pay for his extensive tattoo removal procedures.
Dr. Bruce Shack, a plastic surgeon and member of the ASPS, was the doctor who helped Widner remove the signs of his past.
- Dr. Bruce Shack, plastic surgeon
Widner and his wife Julie found Dr. Shack to be the professional and caring physician they needed for such an arduous treatment process. “He didn’t just see the tattoos; he saw me as a real human being,” Widner told reporters.
The Associated Press story provides details of his laser treatment:
“On June 22, 2009, Widner lay on an operating table, his mind spinning with anxiety and hope. A nurse dabbed numbing gel all over his face. Shack towered over him in protective goggles and injected a local anesthetic. Then he started jabbing Widner’s skin, the laser making a staccato rat-tat-tat sound as it burned through his flesh.”
Through 25 laser tattoo removal procedures, Dr. Shack was able to erase the ink from Widner’s face, giving him hope for a normal life.

Scarring from skin cancer removal can be minimized with a fractional CO2 laser treatment, according to a study by dermatologists.
Reuters Health recently reported about a study of 10 patients undergoing Mohs surgery for skin cancer removal. The skin cancers were located in highly visible locations such as the face, neck and arms.
After removing the lesions, dermatologists treated the edges of the wound with a fractional carbon dioxide laser. To determine the effectiveness of the laser treatment, only half of the wound edges were treated each time. The physicians then closed the wounds using absorbable sutures and adhesive.
Positive results were demonstrated on the laser treated portions. Medscape.com reports:
At the two- to three-month follow-up visit, nine of the ten patients felt the laser-treated side of the wound was cosmetically superior to the untreated side. They also thought the laser-treated sides were significantly better with regard to elevation, discoloration and erythema.
Despite the advancements in skin cancer treatment, scarring remains a concern for patients. Part of the problem is the tendency for skin cancer to appear on highly visible areas of the body, including the neck and face. Therefore, an effective method for minimizing scars should be seriously examined by dermatologists and plastic surgeons.
If the results are validated, Dr. David Ozog claims that the treatment could “change the current approach in all surgical disciplines.” Dr. Ozog and Dr. Ronald Moy are reportedly continuing to study the treatment, with a larger, multi-center study in the works.
The popular CO2 laser employs an invisible light that is absorbed by water, the main component of your tissue. By focusing the laser beam, a doctor can use it to simultaneously cut tissue and seal blood vessels. Unfocused, the beam can remove skin growths by vaporizing the outer skin layers.
With fractional technology, the laser is applied in small columns. Energy penetrates the dermal layer, which stimulates a natural collagen renewal process. In between the columns, small areas of the tissue is untouched.

If you’re bothered by varicose veins, you may be considering treatments like endovenous laser treatment or a vein stripping procedure.
A new study in Archives of Dermatology compares both treatments. In 346 patients, doctors performed either procedure and evaluated: patient satisfaction, recurrence of the veins, blood flow in the veins, and side effects.
Both vein treatments produced similar results. They were effective and showed high patient satisfaction. “”Ninety-eight percent of the study population would undergo each treatment once again, when asked two years after treatment,” said Dr. Knuth Rass of Saarland University Hospital in Homburg.
Recurrence of varicose veins occurred in 16.2 percent of the laser treatment group and 23.1 percent of the vein stripping group.
17.8 percent of laser treatment patients developed a condition resulting in backward flow of blood through the vein. This condition occurred in only 1.3 percent of vein stripping patient group.
Researchers judged the results of endovenous laser treatment as superior. The laser treatment showed a faster recovery, better cosmetic outcome and improved blood flow. However, there were more side effects and pain reported in the laser treatment group.

Tracy Bell is a cosmetic physician in the UK who chooses to undergo cosmetic procedures before offering them to her patients, as she states in this video. The doctor gets up close and personal with the camera during Ultherapy, explaining the sensations that travel through her brow area.
Ultherapy is a skin tightening treatment that takes about 15 minutes, and it will take 8-12 weeks to notice a difference, she explains. Dr. Bell has the Ulthera procedure on her brow and eye area. She points out some crow’s feet and skin laxity on her eye area and says:
“Yes I could have some Botox, and yes I could have a little bit of surgery, but there are some great modalities out there that claim to have a tightening effect.”
Ulthera is one such modality that is designed for non-invasive skin tightening. It works by delivering sound waves deep into the targeted tissue to thermally initiate the body’s own rejuvenating mechanisms. “It feels a bit like laser hair removal,” says Dr. Bell.
During Ultherapy, your physician touches the ultrasound applicator to your skin, providing a view of the underlying tissues in the form of an image on a screen. The same handheld device can then deliver low levels energy at a precise depth, which tightens and lift the tissue, while leaving the surface of your skin unharmed.
After her Ulthera procedure, Dr. Bell says it feels “slightly tight” and “definitely feels as if I had a treatment completed.”

Zerona, a laser fat reducing procedure is gaining mainstream attention and was even recently featured on Bravo’s Real Housewives of Atlanta. The Zerona laser system works by liquefying fat, which is then absorbed and passed out of the body through detoxifying processes. In preparation for an upcoming tour, housewife Kim Zolciak is seen undergoing a Zerona laser treatment in her home while some of her fellow cast mates look on. While the after effects of the procedure are not featured on the show, Zolciak must have been confident in the possibilities as she is shown eating a slice of pizza during treatment.
While we cannot recommend carbo-loading mid-Zerona, we encourage you to contact the Montclair, NJ practice of Dr. DiBernardo to learn more about this cutting edge fat-reducing technology.

In a recent New York Times style column, you can read about the expanding work hours of doctors and other professionals who offer aesthetic treatments.
Their columnist Kayleen Schaefer writes, “In most major cities, if you want pad Thai or a sweater dry-cleaned when people are sleeping, there’s someone who will take care of it (for a price). These days, the same is true of beauty treatments.”
Many of the same changes have happened here in New Jersey. At Dr. Di’Bernardo’s office, we have adjusted our hours a bit. We now schedule laser treatments and filler appointments three times a week and one Saturday a month. In the past it was only one day a week. Also, we now offer Zeltiq, Triactive, laser hair therapy, and ultrasound appointments at night, which we never did before.
We also frequently adjust our office hours to accommodate patients, especially when we are booking consultations 3 weeks out. We often open up a full afternoon (originally scheduled for meetings) to accommodate patients.

Laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments have long been used to reduce the signs of facial aging in Asian patients with no clear indication as to which is safer or more effective.
However, a recent study published by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery suggests that while both treatments are safe and effective facial rejuvenation procedures, there are some distinct differences in the results they produce.
Twelve female patients with Asian skin tones participated in the study, which involved a split-face comparison wherein one half of each participant’s face was treated with a non-ablative 1064 nm q-switched laser, and the other half with IPL FotoFacial treatment.
According to study results, both the IPL and laser treatments produced significant skin rejuvenation and equally improved skin texture, reduced pore size and decreased oil production after five treatments performed in two week intervals.
Both facial rejuvenation treatments also improved skin tone, reduced sun spots and achieved skin lightening effects in patients, although IPL treatment produced more significant results after only three treatments than did the laser treatment.
Ultimately, laser treatment proved to be more effective than IPL in improving skin tone and reducing uneven pigmentation in Asian patients, as laser treatments continued to produce noticeable improvements after treatments four and five, while IPL treatments failed to continue noticeably improving skin tone after the third treatment.
Study results show that while non-ablative laser resurfacing produces more skin tone improvement overall with a five-treatment series, IPL treatment can improve skin tone to a lesser degree but takes only three treatments to produce significant results.
Both treatments are equally safe and effective for patients with Asian skin tone wishing to reduce enlarged pores and facial oiliness, as well as improve skin texture.
Depending on your skin type and unique cosmetic goals, either IPL or non-ablative Laser Genesis treatment may be the right facial rejuvenation option for you. Consult top New Jersey plastic surgeon Dr. Barry DiBernardo to learn more about your options for anti-aging skin treatments.
